Elysian Head Spa is a clinical head spa in Austin, Texas, where every appointment begins with a trichoscopic scalp assessment and every treatment follows a protocol designed by co-founder Katie Wills, an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Certified Trichologist. We treat the scalp as the starting point for healthy hair. Each hair treatment is matched to what we see under magnification, and each client leaves with a hair care plan built for their scalp.

Katie spent 15 years in critical care and cardiology before a 2024 trip to Japan introduced her to head spas [1]. She came back to Austin with a plan to pair the technique and calm of a Japanese head spa with clinical standards. She opened Elysian with me, co-founder Laura Kirby, in November 2024 [1]. I lead brand and operations and bring a background in professional skincare.

Here's how our protocol works, step by step, and the research behind each part.

Why Our Protocol Starts With the Scalp

Your hair follicles live in your scalp. That skin has its own oil production, microbiome, and protective barrier. When that environment is out of balance, the hair forming inside the follicle can be affected before it ever reaches the surface [2]. Researchers have linked oxidative stress on an unhealthy scalp to weaker, poorly formed strands and to early hair fall [2, 3].

Dandruff shows how this works. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis together affect more than half of adults [3]. Flakes can look like a surface issue, yet studies of dandruff show a weakened skin barrier in the scalp itself [4]. Your next strands are forming in that same skin.

This is why every Elysian protocol looks at the scalp first and treats the hair second.

Step 1: A Trichoscopic Assessment at Every Appointment

Trichoscopy is a magnified look at the scalp and hair shaft. Dermatologists use it to tell apart many types of hair loss and scalp conditions without a biopsy [5, 6]. Magnification shows details the eye misses, including empty follicle openings, fine hairs growing among thicker ones, redness around follicles, and scaling [5, 7].

At Elysian, trichoscopy is standard at every visit for head spa treatments. Your Treatment Specialist reviews the findings with you, asks about your lifestyle and goals, and uses what they see to choose your products and techniques.

Because we assess every time, we can compare your scalp from one visit to the next and adjust your plan based on what has changed.

Step 2: A Treatment Path Chosen by What We Find

Care at Elysian runs on two paths. Your assessment and goals decide which one fits, and some clients use both.

Our head spa treatments are performed by trained Treatment Specialists. Each service follows the same clinical structure and adapts to your scalp.

  • The Alchemist: Our corrective treatment for dryness, excess oil, flaking, and irritation. Your Treatment Specialist selects from targeted Oway scalp treatments, including Purify for buildup, Rebalance for excess oil, and Soothing for redness and sensitivity. Available as Focused (60 minutes, $180) or Extended (90 minutes, $250).

  • The Retreat: A restorative treatment centered on slow, shiatsu-based scalp massage, warm towels, and aromatherapy to ease tension. Available as Focused (60 minutes) or Extended (90 minutes).

  • The Restoration: Our men’s treatment, combining scalp, beard, and skin care in one appointment.

  • The Remedy: A 100-minute treatment that pairs a full head spa with a facial ($300).

  • The Ready: The Remedy, completed with a Finishing Blow Dry.

Every head spa treatment includes enzymatic scalp exfoliation with steam and hot towels, YUME shiatsu scalp massage, and scalp treatments customized for you. The Alchemist, The Remedy, and The Ready also include a double cleanse and hair masks matched to your strands, which work as a deep conditioning treatment while the scalp work happens at the root.

The massage is part of the clinical design. In a small study, men who received four minutes of standardized scalp massage daily for 24 weeks had measurably thicker hair [8]. The researchers linked the change to stretching forces on the dermal papilla cells at the base of each follicle. In a larger survey of people with pattern hair loss, about two-thirds of those who kept up daily scalp massage reported that their hair loss had stabilized or that they saw hair regrowth [9]. Neither study positions massage as a stand-alone answer to hair loss, and neither do we.

Calm is part of the design too. Research in mice found that the main stress hormone can hold hair follicle stem cells in a resting state longer, delaying new growth [10]. The Retreat is built to lower tension on purpose, and that research gives the choice a clinical reason.

Step 3: At-Home Care Built From Your Assessment

What happens between visits shapes your results as much as what happens in the treatment room. Your Treatment Specialist recommends at-home hair care based on your assessment findings.

For most clients, that plan centers on the Oway line: a hair bath (Oway’s term for shampoo) and conditioner matched to your scalp type, plus a hair mask for deep hydration if your strands show dryness. Clients focused on thinning hair may be guided toward a scalp treatment such as Oway Densifying Remedy. In the spa, Rebuild M+ can be added as an enhancement, a nourishing treatment for damaged strands.

Strand care matters for a clear reason. The outer layer of each hair, the cuticle, is made of overlapping cells that protect the fiber inside. Conditioners and masks help smooth that layer, improve hydration, and lower friction, which helps reduce breakage over time [11]. A deep conditioner works on the strand and has no effect on the follicle, so every plan pairs strand care with scalp care.

Heat belongs in your home plan too. In a controlled study, hair surface damage rose as dryer temperature went up, and drying from about 6 inches away with the dryer in constant motion caused less damage than letting hair air dry [12]. If you blow dry at home, keep the dryer moving and keep your distance.

Step 4: Reassessment at Every Return Visit

Every head spa visit starts with trichoscopy again, which gives us an ongoing record of your scalp. If dryness improves, your Treatment Specialist adjusts your scalp treatments. If shedding continues or density changes, they can refer you to a hair growth consultation with a nurse practitioner.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your appointment begins with a conversation about your hair history and goals, followed by your trichoscopic assessment. Head spa treatments end with a wet style, either a braid or a bun. To leave with dry, styled hair, add a Finishing Blow Dry when you book, or choose The Ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Elysian Head Spa?

Elysian Head Spa is a clinical head spa at 3408 West Avenue in Austin, Texas, focused on scalp health and hair growth. Every appointment includes a trichoscopic scalp assessment, and every treatment follows a protocol designed by co-founder Katie Wills, an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Certified Trichologist.

What is a trichoscopic assessment?

It is a magnified exam of your scalp and hair. It shows follicle openings, hair thickness, redness, scaling, and buildup that are hard to see with the eye alone [5].

Is a head spa treatment the same as a hair growth treatment?

No. Head spa treatments focus on scalp health and are performed by Treatment Specialists. Hair growth care, including FoLix, starts with a consultation with a nurse practitioner and follows a separate clinical path.

Can a head spa treatment help with dandruff or dryness?

The Alchemist is designed for dryness, flaking, excess oil, and irritation. Your Treatment Specialist chooses scalp treatments based on what your assessment shows. For persistent symptoms, a nurse practitioner consultation may be recommended.

Who performs treatments at Elysian?

Head spa treatments are performed by trained Treatment Specialists. Hair growth consultations are led by a nurse practitioner, and FoLix treatments are performed by Katie Wills, NP.
